The NGO Remar distributes more than 1.5 million servings of food since last September

    • Voluntario de Remar ONG dando comida a refugiadosMore Than 40 volunteers attending the basic needs of thousands of refugees who arrive daily in adverse conditions in Serbia, Croatia and Greece, fleeing their country.
  • Remar has installed six tents of more than 100 square meters with heating systems, where it welcomes immigrants and provides clothing, food and medical or psychological care, through the help of volunteers.
  • Remar plans to step up its humanitarian work in critical areas, especially in Greece, where cooperates with Father Angel and Messengers of Peace.

Since last September 2015, more than 40 volunteers from the NGO Remar give assistance in Serbia, Croatia and Greece to the thousands of Syrian refugees fleeing their country. Since then, more than 1.5 million food portions have been distributed, and six tents of more than 100 square meters have been installed and equipped with heating systems to accommodate families of refugees, give them hot food, clothing and psychological comfort.

Currently, the most critical point is Presevo, where daily, between 3,000 and 5,000 refugees are taken in, since Serbia is the first country on the Balkan route where registration and fingerprinting of arriving refugees is taken. Remar, along with Red Cross and UNICEF, is part of the very few NGO's allowed to work at the military camp in Presevo.

In this camp Remar volunteers distribute soup, hot tea, cookies and fruit, as well as clothing (especially socks and hats, since many refugees arrive soaking wet and very cold). They also spend time talking to those who pass through the tents, to meet them, to know their situations, and to provide them with support and counseling.

Once the police registration is passed, they continue their journey to Croatia or, in some cases when night arrives before they're able to pass the registration, they are taken to a pavilion provided by the Serbian government where the NGO Remar has set up 500 beds (with the current facilities, hundreds of children sleep on the dining tables every night due to lack of space).

Performance in Lesbos, in cooperation with Father Angel and Messengers of Peace

On the other hand, the NGO Remar and Messengers of Peace have been working together since early last December 2015 in response to the 1,500 people who reach the island every day by boat risking their lives, and more than 4,000 remain in camps days after their arrival.

Both organizations have organized footholds in Athens in Croatia, and three in Serbia, in which thousands of food portions are distributed daily.

Father Angel, who regularly visits the facilities, from Lesbos said that "It's shameful what we're still seeing here. As Pope Francisco said more than a year ago, the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean have become the largest cemetery in Europe''.

''We have already seen the rawness of life to these people, who just want to live" he added.
